A friend once told me that this part of the US is like a retirement home for outdoors enthusiasts where everyone at any moment was ready to jump up and climb a mountain. This sounded too good to be true, but in the end, the summary wasn’t too far-fetched. Of all the cities we planned to visit on our roadtrip, I had the highest expectations for Denver. The city lived up to my expectations, but I have to admit, I was intimidated by the people and the place. For scale, North Carolina’s tallest mountain is just shy of 6,700’ tall whereas folks in Denver shoot to climb mountains called “fourteeners” which are over 14,000’ tall and collect these like charms on a charm bracelet. You don’t dabble in this city and people are full of ideas, adventures, and stories. People have a lot to say but also the experiences to back it up. As a result, I shut up and listened, enjoying what folks were passionate about. However, what I also appreciated was that folks didn’t just let me listen and also wanted to hear my thoughts and experiences, offering up the floor to introverts as well. I consider Denver to be the big leagues of the city/outdoor world. You can see the snow-capped mountains from nearly everywhere in the city and they serve as a perpetual reminder of adventures you could be having. Sara and I are unfortunately not the first to discover this so the cost of living reflects the high quality of the living environment. My basket of goods of an apartment, coffee, tacos, and gas told me that the city ain’t cheap but not as bad as California or New York. Denver offers unparalleled access to outdoor activities for a city of its size, but to live comfortably, would require a great job and career path.
