An easy living city that lives by the car but isn’t bogged down like Atlanta with many tasty food spots, microbreweries, neat cafes, and close by parks. We rolled into the city and had a quintessential “small world” experience where our wonderful couchsurfing host for the trip was actually a close friend of a friend and had stopped by for a while in Colin’s old place in Atlanta! Through a little name game fun, we figured out that we’d met each other before! Couchsurfing was a great way to learn about the city since we had a city guide passionate about all the angles and avenues of the city. We got a great sense of the city without going the wrong way on a bunch of 1 way roads. A few notable spots:
Nifty Anecdote There’s a railroad running right through the city that we zig-zagged throughout our time in Raleigh. At one point, as it started to sprinkle on us, the lights came on at a crossing and the gates came down. We figured we’d be waiting a while for the train to cross but then around the corner comes a vehicle reminiscent of a Shriner’s mini go-cart. It was some sort of railroad repair vehicle with 1 person tucked on the side so low that he could’ve picked up a penny off the track. We had a good laugh and crossed but then around the corner came a second, third, and eventually fifth and sixth repair vehicle; each one tooting it’s goofy horn and confusing the crossing sensors causing the gates to go up and down much to the chagrin of the patient and confused drivers. I wish I’d snagged a picture but the best I can describe is that the vehicle looked like a cross between a big red spider and a merry-go-round.
