Buenos Aires is one of my favorite cities. This was the 4th or 5th time I've been there, and I'd go back again and again. It's very European, and it's easy to get around using buses and metros. The people are nice, and they are passionate about their opinions which makes things fun. We stayed with a family friend in Centro (near Recoleta / Retiro), and she was THE BEST. She took such good care of us, and it was so needed after coming out of 16 days in a camper van. The location was beautiful and centrally located. There were lots of bars and restaurants around. I'd recommend the free walking tour we went on, Buenos Aires Free Walks. They do 2 free tours daily - one in the morning and one in the afternoon - with different content. We did the morning one (Walking Through Recoleta Tour), and we kept meaning to do the afternoon one as well but didn't get the time. Our tour guide was informative and funny, and she told a lot of stories about the politics and history of the region. I always felt like she was being impartial and trying to give us the whole picture. One of the most touristy spots but still a must see in BA is La Boca. It's very colorful with lots of little tourist shops and street performers. You can get tango lessons on the street or take some photos with a male or female tango dancer. I actually have a photo of me and a tango dancer who gave me lessons for an hour when I was about 16: Another must see / do is a real tango show. You can do a dinner + show which is a little more expensive, or you can do just the show. You really need to experience the tango culture, so even if it's without the dinner, I highly recommend seeing a show!
There are speakeasy bars all around the city, and the new craze is going to a "secret dinner" where a chef cooks for you in the comfort of their own home. We didn't do any because we had such a fantastic chef cooking for us at her home every night, but they seem intriguing. Just do a Google search and see what you find! See our Argentina photos here.
