Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

This is where the backpackers flock to.  Angkor Wat and all the other temples!  Look at our photos from Cambodia here to see photos of each of the temples we visited in Krong Siem Reap.  We went to Angkor Wat (duh), Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm (the Lara Croft / Tomb Raider temple), Preah Khan Temple, Ta Keo, Neak Pean / Jayatataka (in the middle of a lake), Ta Som Temple, Eastern Mebon, Prae Roup Temple, and some other smaller ones that I don’t even remember.  There are so many, and they are everywhere.

 
Oh, make sure you’re dressed respectfully for the temples!  No shorts or skirts above the knees and no bare shoulders!
 
You can hire a tuk tuk to drive you around to the temples, or your hostel most likely takes backpackers on tours.  We did one tour with our hostel to 3 of the main temples, and then we hired a tuk tuk for the second day to see some of the smaller temples.  You need to purchase a pass to get into any of the temples, and they are very strict about this.  It has your photo on it as well, so you can’t just get some random one from the guy at the hostel. 
 
We stayed at Siem Reap Pub Hostel which was fine and had a pool (much needed).  I also heard good things about Funky Flashpacker Party Hostel.  Both have cheap beer and parties. 
 
There’s a rooftop bar at Kesorkole High Class KTV that you can watch the sunset from, but be warned – all the single women you see in the karaoke rooms and downstairs are prostitutes. 
 
Check out Bugs Café for sure.  It’s normal to eat bugs in Cambodia, but this café is run by a French guy and a Cambodian chef that want to make them actually taste good (and make sure the poison is taken out safely from the scorpions).  You should go with a small group and order one of the tasting platters such as this one:
